David Award

Mile High Chapter ALA

David Award

The objective of this award is to recognize a legal administrator for significant and extended contributions to the Association of Legal Administrators and its membership on a local, regional and national level.

The award is named after two former Mile High Chapter Presidents who both went on to become president of the National Association of Legal Administrators. David S. Vogels, Jr. (deceased) was the 1982-83 Mile High Chapter President and President of the National Association in 1987-88. David W. Brezina (deceased) was Mile High Chapter President in 1989-90 and National President in 1996-97.

A selection committee composed of three current Board members; two members in good standing from the membership at large and two Past Presidents in good standing are convened once per year to determine if there are any qualified candidates for the award. If there are no deserving candidates, the committee adjourns until the following year.

The following selection criteria are generic in nature and are not intended to be all-inclusive. They are meant to be a guideline for the selection committee in the selection process. Some of the guidelines are subjective in nature.

  • Seven years’ membership in ALA with at least five years or more serving as a significant committee member, committee chair, officer or director.
  • An important quality of this award winner is accessibility to other ALA members for assistance in helping develop solutions to problems or alternative ways of accomplishing goals.
  • This person can be counted on to maintain confidentiality and has earned the trust and respect of the members of ALA.
  • The recipient will have committed significant time and effort to the continuing education and training of other administrators.
  • The recipient will have supported ALA-sponsored/supported events such as monthly meetings, seminars, chapter events and regional events and international conferences.
  • The recipient will have made significant efforts in promoting legal administrators and ALA to other legal groups and the community at large.
  • The recipient of the award will have contributed written materials to legal publications or will have been a speaker at local ALA chapter events, or a lecturer at the regional or international conference.
  • The recipient provided/gave time and talent above and beyond.
  • Consideration should be given to past presidents who continue to play an active role in the chapter.
  • The recipient helped out the chapter in an emergency situation to meet a specific need (e.g. filing in for a vacated Board position).
  • The recipient encourages the fostering of partnerships with legal vendors.
  • The David Award will be presented at the managing partner breakfast in the fall and the winner will be encouraged to bring their managing partner to the award presentation.

The recipient will receive a traveling plaque; similar to the plaque the Mile High Chapter President currently receives and will also receive another award to keep.

Additionally, as a token of the recipient’s continued dedication, the recipient is given a lifetime, honorary membership in the Mile High Chapter. The first selection committee was convened in July of 2003.
